Year to date...

2 min read

Yeah, grand total of one vector made on my birthday for my birthday.

How have I been wasting the year if not turning ponies into EQG using screenshots from the series? Playing MMORPGs. A couple of years ago if anyone noticed some "lean time" between updates, I was into some early 90s RPGs that I had enjoyed 20 or so years ago (Eye of the Beholder and Bane of the Cosmic Forge) that took up a lot of time and whatnot.

So the end of 2019 comes, and I download the Hero Wars app for my Pixel, and instead of being a puzzle game, it's really an RPG. Fine, I win some levels, beat some teams in the Arena, yadda yadda. I find myself needing gems to get more units of energy to keep playing the game... so under the "get free gems" tab, all I need to do is download another game and get a character to level 50 and I can get, like, a scwillion gems and have energy up the wazoo to keep playing Hero Wars...

I start playing the other game, RAID: Shadow Legends, and by March, I've uninstalled Hero Wars, in spite of investing at least $50.00 in it. Then again, I spent more on Pokemon back in the day, so it's not completely pathetic, I keep telling myself.

So I'm playing RAID, two Free-to-Play accounts using two gmail addresses, and for F2p I suppose I wasn't that bad. Was made Clan leader at one point, in spite of not being good at recruitment of new members. Just couldn't seem to break through to the endgame, and as of last Monday, I really had to rethink how much time I spent playing the game. Too much, obviously, when I've got a phone charger on my desk at work for when I need to run auto-battles in the background when I'm trying to do my actual job. So as of last Monday, I uninstalled RAID as well... and now I don't know what to do with all of the extra time I now have.

I'm not taking requests, so don't even think about asking.

As I am wont to do, I took a quick look back at the 59 official vectors submitted to DA this year and wasn't sure what to feel about it.

57 of them had a least one MLP character in them, and of those, only one had a pony... and technically he would have been a kelpie in that situation.  I used one screenshot from Season 9 the entire year, and the product didn't even end up on DA, since it was for the OC collaborative.

I went outside of MLP for screenshots four times, all Disney shows:  Duck Tales twice (needed the proper colors for Juniper's Negaduck costume), SVtFoE, and Gravity Falls.

2019's New Year's Resolution was to see how long I could go without vectoring a character twice.  It was probably the biggest reason so few ponies were vectored, however I did manage Tirek and a pukwudgie played fairly straight.

Number of characters done EQG style whom I had never done in that style before: 25... most surprising to me... Applejack. Hadn't done her once in 7 years of doing EQG style.  Used her a lot for Fiddlesticks, though. (Even more surprising is that I still have not done Rainbow Dash as an EQG.)

Duplicated characters by year's end:  Beauty Brass, Fluttershy, and Starlight Glimmer were all done twice.

I experimented with "younger" versions of some of the characters when the right models presented themselves:  Celestaia, Luna, Cadance, Granny Smith, Auntie Applesauce, and Pear Butter all received teenager style makeovers.  Sunset Shimmer got a freshman makeover, and Sci-Twi went even younger thanks to Technicolor Waves.  I suppose Chestnut Magnifico using a Rainbow Dash base to make Daring Do in a Star Wars crossover for May the Fourth also counts.

Callbacks to old character designs: 11.

New characters overall: Cozy Glow, Chrysalis, Sandbar, Raspberry Lilac, Kerfuffle, Pear Butter, Yona, Chestnut Magnifico, Watermelody, Indigo Zap, Sugarcoat

Ironic realization:  I have never vectored Flash Sentry as a human, and I have never vectored Sandbar as a pony.

22020 Resolution: Don't stop.  Quality over quantity, but keep making art.  Don't be afraid to experiment.

Then again, sometimes it is a 1200 word hastily written story based off of a Train song that probably wouldn't pass moderation, and other times still it is nothing more than a status update.

Just when I was gearng up for the season finale, the left hinge of my laptop fell apart.  On the plus side, it was under warranty, but I was right in the middle of vectoring EQG Babs Seed when it happened. Geek Squad had best not lose her or I will be... peeved.  As it is, I'm back on the desktop for now... the one whose hard drive imploded back in '15 but still runs decent enough to store my library of mp3s for my Zune.

Back to the show ending and how it will affect me... honestly, I thought that Star vs. was going to last longer than it did... but then I remembered "Oh, yeah. Disney."  Because Disney shows running more than two seasons seems to be a feat in itself, never mind four, plus it sounded like there was a ton of executive meddling going on in the background of that one.  The DuckTales reboot is worth watching, but I'm not sure what's going on with that episode schedule, either.

I think I mentioned a while back that I lost Discovery Family as part of my cable package right before The Mean Six aired.  Like, at midnight on that very day, so I have yet to actually see the Finale yet, as well as a bunch of the season that I missed due to having stuff to do during the streaming parties.  That and the Powers That Be finally caught on to Dailymotion being used as the alternative to YouTube for full episode uploads, so almost as soon as EQG has posted the link, it's been taken down.  I'll see them eventually... call it tearing out the last pages of a book to pretend the story's going to last a bit longer, especially since it's not like I have the channel to watch reruns, and the illegal uploads are going to keep getting taken down.

I have been dabbling into my OCs again, especially since I got into ponies to learn how to draw and write them better.  Not sure that it worked, but I've got some drivel in a file on GDocs.  Heck, I even rewrote the origin story of one, since I think I had the old one jotted down in a notebook somewhere.  Actually, a bunch of it was written on the back of some printed out Google Map directions to Watkins Glen, New York, so I gave it an update nine years in the making.  Talk about what a long, strange trip it's been...  I'm certainly not drinking that White Russian right now, either.  Pinnacle stopped making that flavor... or at least stopped making it available to me.  That new Jaegermeister hot ginger... that's the stuff.

In any case, I'm not quite dead yet.  Pining for the fjords, perhaps. Think I'll go for a walk...

Sometimes I just need to actually see the statistics... see where I've been so I can get a grip on where I'm going.

Just from a purely EQG standpoint, in 2018 I vectored 54 characters as humans:

Apple Rose, Granny Smith, Goldie Delicious, Sonata Dusk, Beauty Brass, Flitter, Daisy, Roseluck, Fiddlesticks, Moondancer, Fleur, Aria Blaze, Wallflower Blush, Cranky Doodle, Sweetie Belle, Gabrielle Griffon, Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, Babs Seed, Rarity, Starlight Glimmer, Sea Swirl, Mystery Mint, Grand Pear, Sunset Shimmer, Fluttershy, Rumble, Button Mash, Little Red, Peach Fuzz, Cloud Kicker, Alula, Lightning Dust, Vinyl Scratch, Sugar Belle, Ocellus, Fresh Coat, Sassy Saddles, Saffron Masala, Night Glider, Juniper Montage, Flurry Heart, Shining Armor, Twilight Sparkle, Trixie, Merry May, Octavia, Frederick Horshoepin, Hill Song, Symphony, Parish Nandermane, and Coloratura.

Of the 54 characters, nine of these were vectored a second time during the course of the year.  Twilight and Wallflower have the distinction of being the only EQG characters to have three different vectors in 2018... although whether all three of the Twilights are the same Twilight or not could be up for debate.  That still leaves at least 41 different EQG characters vectored in 2018, so almost 76% of my character selection was someone different.  28 were even characters that I had never attempted before in EQG style, which was certainly intentional.

Ember and Smolder were also EQG-ified into puppies... and there was Cranky's little blue bird of happiness...

Counting Ember as a character, my largest group vector of the year featured 8 characters: Group Selfie 2.  If Ember isn't counted, I had three submissions featuring at least seven EQG characters each, with only one character appearing twice among the three groups.

As far as new characters overall... Wallflower Blush, Star Tracker, Ocellus, Foehammer (OC), Helia, Coconut Cream, Smolder, Night Glider, Saffron Masala, Sassy Saddles, Fresh Coat, Groucho Mark, Sunburst, Mystery Mint, Pound Cake, Pumpkin Cake, Cranky Doodle, a Storm Guard, Big Belle, and Slapshot.  Yeah, I was surprised by a couple on this list as well... what took me so long?

But that's 2018 in a nutshell, I suppose... let's see what the new year brings.

Taking inventory to see how much I've actually accomplished art-wise in the past 10 months...

from the list...

#1)  Nope, didn't happen.

#2)  Also didn't happen.

#3)  Didn't realize that this one was on the list until I re-read it.  But I can check this one off.

#4)  Well... Princess is also my OC, and considering her origin story... I'm checking this one off, too.

#5)  Gee, could I have been any more vague?  Celestia and Luna... check.  Blueblood and Trenderhoof?  Sort of check.  Fleur and Donut Joe... check.  "Others who have official names"... I'd say that Mulia Mild, Coloratura, Concerto, Frederick Horseshoepin, Parish Nandermane, Starlight Glimmer, Jinx, Moondancer, Pepperdance, Nightjar, Night Light, Hondo Flanks, Igneous Rock Pie, and Little Strongheart... I think I can check this off, although I'm not 100% satisfied with it.  That just means I need to do more, right?

#6)  Nyx & Spike, Flutterbee, Spike's Doll Collection, Pinkamena Maud, Shake Your Tail, Camoflage, Sombra doing the Fashion Plate face, Kiwi Blitz Cosplay, Beauty wearing the Princess Dress, Rivals Parts I & II, Smarty and Brutus... yeah, I think I satisfied this one. Check.

#7) Check.

5 out of 7?  Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, actually.
